When sleep no longer comes naturally

When sleep becomes something you have to get right

You may recognize this: the more important sleep becomes, the harder it seems to come. You monitor how tired you feel, worry about the night ahead during the day, and try to do everything right so that you can sleep.

But sleep doesn’t respond well to effort. The harder you try to make it happen, the further away it can seem.

It is possible to recover from insomnia. The answer is often not to try harder to sleep better, but to develop a different relationship with sleep.

You don’t have to deal with insomnia alone

Insomnia can begin for many different reasons. But when it persists, the things that keep it going are often different from what originally caused it.

Worrying about sleep, monitoring it and constantly trying to make sleep happen can create a cycle that is difficult to break on your own.

In sleep therapy, we explore together what may be keeping your insomnia going and what can help you move towards better sleep.

Understand your insomnia

Identify the factors that may be keeping your sleep difficulties going.

Reduce worry about sleep

Learn new ways to respond to wakefulness and difficult nights.

Regain trust in your sleep

Sleep can gradually become something you no longer have to work so hard at.

What happens in sleep therapy?

Sleep therapy is not about giving you a new set of rules to follow. We start with your individual situation and explore what may be keeping your insomnia going.

The aim is to reduce worry and effort around sleep and gradually help your body and mind rediscover a more natural way of sleeping.

Understand your situation

We look at your sleep, your current life situation and the factors that may be keeping your sleep difficulties going.

02

Find what works for you

You will learn practical ways of responding to your sleep difficulties that are tailored to your situation. You don’t need to change everything at once

03

Rebuild trust in your sleep

We practise new ways of responding to wakefulness, difficult nights and sleep itself, so that sleep no longer has such a strong hold on your life.

Sleep therapy in practice

Sleep therapy consists of four sessions, tailored to your individual situation and needs. During the sessions, you will gain a better understanding of your insomnia and learn practical ways to work with sleep difficulties in your everyday life.

Sleep therapy may be helpful if sleep difficulties have started to affect your daily life, or if you notice that worrying about sleep and trying to control it are taking up more and more space.

You don’t need more sleep tips

I’m Päivi Karhu, a sleep therapist and solution–focused brief therapist. I also know from personal experience what it is like when sleep starts taking up too much space in your life. That is why I understand that insomnia is rarely resolved simply by following more advice about how to sleep.

My approach combines evidence-based methods for insomnia, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and solution-focused therapeutic work. In addition to my work as a sleep therapist, I train future sleep coaches and teach on topics related to sleep and insomnia.

It is important to me that sleep therapy does not become another thing you have to get right. The aim is not to learn how to sleep perfectly, but to ease the struggle around sleep and gradually rebuild trust in your own ability to sleep.

Experiences with sleep therapy

Insomnia is different for everyone, and so is the path towards better sleep. Here is how some of my clients have described our work together and the difference it has made to their sleep and everyday life.

“I never thought I could make this much progress with my sleep, but this therapeutic sleep coaching made it possible.”

Female client, 27

“I had seen a GP, an occupational psychologist and a sleep specialist, and had started CBT-I, but it was only with Päivi’s guidance that I finally began to understand my sleep. I received practical advice and gained a much better understanding of what was going on.””

Female client, 55

“Sleep coaching gave me useful tools for working through my difficulties and confidence that things could improve. What made a particular difference was Päivi’s kindness, calmness, warmth and expertise.”

Female client, 40
